Grammar in this conversation — Softening complaints: "excusez-moi, mais…"

French complaints almost always start with excusez-moi or je suis désolé(e) + mais. The apology comes from YOU even though THEY have the issue — it makes the complaint land softly. Skip this step and you sound rude in French.
