Grammar in this conversation — "avoir mal à" — describing pain
In French, you don't "have a headache" — you "have pain to the head". The construction is always avoir mal à + body part. Match the article to the body part.
- J'ai mal à la tête. (head — feminine)
- J'ai mal au dos. (back — masculine, à + le → au)
- J'ai mal aux dents. (teeth — plural, à + les → aux)
- J'ai mal à l'estomac. (stomach — vowel)
