The situation

You: It's the first report card of the year. You meet your son Yanis's grade 3 teacher.

Them: Madame Bouchard, his teacher, leads the 15-minute meeting.

Goal: Understand how he is doing, ask about the one weak area, and learn how to help at home.

Bonjour madame. Oui, on a vu le bulletin — comment ça se passe en classe ?
Hello ma'am. Yes, we saw the report card — how is it going in class?

Globalement, très bien. Il est curieux, il participe beaucoup, et en mathématiques, il est parmi les plus forts.
Overall, very well. He is curious, he participates a lot, and in math he is among the strongest.

Ça nous rassure. Et la note en lecture ? Elle est plus basse que les autres.
That reassures us. And the reading grade? It is lower than the others.

C'est le point à travailler. Il lit bien à voix haute, mais il a de la difficulté à résumer ce qu'il a lu.
That is the area to work on. He reads well out loud, but he has trouble summarizing what he has read.

What can we do at home to help him?

Quinze minutes de lecture par soir, et après, posez-lui deux questions : qu'est-ce qui s'est passé, et qu'est-ce que tu en penses ?
Fifteen minutes of reading each evening, and afterwards, ask him two questions: what happened, and what do you think of it?

C'est facile à faire. Est-ce qu'on devrait lire en français ou dans notre langue ?

Les deux ! La compréhension se transfère d'une langue à l'autre. L'important, c'est le plaisir de lire.

Grammar in this conversation — Indirect questions — asking smoothly inside a sentence

Direct: Qu'est-ce qui s'est passé ? Inside a sentence, the question words change: posez-lui deux questions : ce qui s'est passé, ce qu'il en pense. Pattern: qu'est-ce qui → ce qui; qu'est-ce que → ce que. Examiners hear this as B1+ structure.

• Demandez-lui ce qui s'est passé dans l'histoire.
• Il a de la difficulté à résumer ce qu'il a lu.
• Dites-moi ce que vous en pensez.
