Meeting your neighbour

Small talk in the hallway — and a small favour

The situation

You: You moved in last weekend. You cross your neighbour in the hallway.

Them: Madame Côté, your retired neighbour from apartment 4.

Goal: Introduce yourself, make small talk, and ask where to put recycling.

The conversation (French & English)

Bonjour ! Vous êtes le nouveau voisin du trois, c'est ça ?
Hello! You are the new neighbour in apartment 3, right?

Oui, bonjour ! Je m'appelle Amir. On a emménagé en fin de semaine.
Yes, hello! My name is Amir. We moved in over the weekend.

Bienvenue ! Moi, c'est Madame Côté, du quatre. Vous venez d'où ?
Welcome! I am Madame Côté, from apartment 4. Where are you from?

On vient d'Iran. On est arrivés au Canada il y a six mois.
We are from Iran. We arrived in Canada six months ago.

Et vous parlez déjà bien français ! Le quartier vous plaît ?
And you already speak good French! Do you like the neighbourhood?

Oui, beaucoup. C'est tranquille et il y a un beau parc tout près.
Yes, a lot. It is quiet and there is a nice park very close.

Le parc Laurier, oui. En hiver, il y a même une patinoire !
Laurier Park, yes. In winter, there is even a skating rink!

Ah, super ! Petite question : où est-ce qu'on met le recyclage ?
Oh, great! Small question: where do we put the recycling?

Les bacs verts sont derrière l'immeuble. La collecte, c'est le jeudi matin.
The green bins are behind the building. Pickup is Thursday morning.

Merci beaucoup ! Passez une belle journée.
Thank you very much! Have a nice day.

Grammar in this conversation — Il y a — two jobs in one phrase

Il y a + noun = there is/are: il y a un beau parc. Il y a + time = ago: il y a six mois (six months ago). Same three words, two meanings — context tells you which. Both are everywhere in small talk.
