Meet your manager — strengths, goals, asking for training

The situation

You: You've been at your job for one year. It's your annual review.

Hello, have a seat. So, you have already been working with us for a year.

Oui, le temps passe vite ! J'apprends beaucoup ici.
Yes, time flies! I am learning a lot here.

Overall, I am very satisfied with your work. You are reliable and your colleagues appreciate you.

Merci beaucoup.
Thank you very much. Are there areas to improve?

Yes, just one: written communication in French. Your emails are sometimes hard to understand.

I agree. Actually, could the company pay for a French course?

C'est une bonne idée. Nous avons un budget de formation. Je vais faire la demande cette semaine.
That is a good idea. We have a training budget. I will make the request this week.

Merci.
Thank you. My goal this year is to become more independent and take on more responsibilities.

Parfait.
Perfect. We will meet again in six months to take stock. Keep it up!

Grammar in this conversation — Conditional for polite requests

When you ask your boss for something, the conditional softens the request: pourrait (could), voudrais (would like), serait (would be). Direct peut sounds demanding; pourrait sounds professional. This is a CLB 6 marker the examiners listen for.
