Bonjour!

French grammar · B1

Relative Pronouns: qui, que, dont, où

A clear, example-first explanation built for CLB 6 / B1 — the level you need for TCF / TEF Canada.

Overview

Link two short sentences into one. Like English "who, which, that". Four French forms — choice depends on grammatical role.

qui = subject

The relative clause is missing its subject.

que = direct object

The relative clause is missing its direct object.

dont = of/about which

Replaces de + thing/person.

où = where / when

Place or time.

Quick trick

After the blank, is there a SUBJECT? → use que. No subject? → use qui.
