Plus-que-parfait: "had done"

Overview
Action that happened BEFORE another past action. English "had + past participle". You need this to talk about an earlier-past in a story.
Formation
avoir/être in imparfait + past participle. Same auxiliary rules as passé composé.
- Quand je suis arrivé, il avait déjà mangé. (he had already eaten)
- Elle était partie avant moi.
Conjugation: parler

With être verbs — agreement
For DR & MRS VANDERTRAMP verbs, past participle agrees with subject.
- Elle était allée au marché.
- Ils étaient partis tôt.
When to use it
Mostly in storytelling, when one past event happened before another.
- J'ai cherché mes clés. Je les avais oubliées au bureau.
- Quand elle est arrivée, le film avait déjà commencé.
