Action that happened BEFORE another past action. English "had + past participle". You need this to talk about an earlier-past in a story.

Formation

avoir/être in imparfait + past participle. Same auxiliary rules as passé composé.

With être verbs — agreement

For DR & MRS VANDERTRAMP verbs, past participle agrees with subject.
